What is GSM?

First off, the definition of GSM is Global System for Mobile Communications. GSM is a second-generation phone system, while the first was analogue mobile phone system (also known as AMPS). GSM is much more advanced then AMPS, in that it has digital call quality, which means the sound is more advanced, and roaming is no longer impossibility. With GSM, there is much higher voice quality then with AMPS, and allows people to talk to others through other alternatives, such as sending photos or text messages. GSM is now the standard for cell phone communications; AMPS is no longer used.

Standards are important, but until 1990, there were none. This caused a lot of problems with the compatibility, and eventually a group had to be started in order to find a way to end the problems. It didn’t work out so good though, and countries all over the world started making their own systems. Eventually all the systems were tested to see which one worked the best, and one was finally chosen (despite that the inventors had no industry backing them up).

How does GSM work? When phones connect to GSM, they search for radio cells in their area, and these cells are what enable phones to interact with each other. GSM is a cellular network, which means that it uses many radio cells in order to provide overall better service to phones. Networks also reduce the amount of power your phone uses, as well as improves the coverage of your phone (it can call places further away). Without networks, cell phones would be severely limited in their radio coverage.

There are several subsystems within the GSM system that do all the little jobs that make up the big job. All of the subsystems interact with each other to allow people to do everything from talk to each other to buying ringtones.

Another feature that is very useful is the Subscriber Identity Module, more recognized as the SIM card. One can save all of their data on a SIM card instead of the phone itself, so if they happen to switch phones, they can just take out the SIM card and put it in their new phone. This saves the time of having to hand-copy everything from the old phone onto the new phone, making the SIM card a powerful accessory.

How do you save to a memory card? I don't think my phone has that capability, and I'm not having any luck finding a data cable to transfer information without spending an arm and a leg directly through Cingular. They don't keep them in stock at the local stores.
